ISI 2010 Impact Factors

The new ISI® Journal Citation Report (JCR®) impact factors for 2010 are out. Of the two big ones, Nature risen to 36.101 in 2010 from 34.480 in 2009; Science is now listed at 31.364, rising from 29.747 in 2009.

For the field of Ecology and Biodiversity conservation, the 40 highest ranked journals are listed below. The most obvious changed is that the two top journals, TREE and Ecology Letters have gained over-proportionally, with Ecology Letters having overtaken TREE this year through a leap from an IF of 10 to 15 approximately. I’m not sure if there is any particular reason for this strong increase of cites at the top; it may be that the field is concentrating somewhat more on the “big” instead of more specialized questions, and the big journals are profiting from that over-proportionally, but it may also just be due to changes in citation psychology or search behavior, or simply due to chance. Conservation letters is listed for the first time, with an IF of 4.7. Of the other journals, it seems that particularly Global Change Biology, Ecology and Society, but also the journals of the British Ecological Society such as the Journal of Ecology and the Journal of Applied Ecology have done quite well.
