Lessons from meteorological and climate models for predictive ecology

Brian McGill has a great post over at Dynamic Ecology about predictions in meteorology, and the lessons to be learned for establishing a more predictive tradition in ecology. I have made a few comments over there that I don’t want to repeat here, but I thought this would make a good opportunity to post a talk by Tim Palmer on predictions and uncertainty in weather and climate models that I really liked, in particular because he discusses questions regarding the scaling, validation etc. complex / chaotic systems that seem to me of relevance to (predictive) ecology as well.
