The official announcement is planned for Monday, but apparently the winners of the EU “Future and Emerging Technologies Flagship Initiative” are known: one billion (1.000.000.000!!!) Euro over 10 years are shared by the “Graphene-Driven Revolutions in ICT and Beyond” (GRAPHENE), a consortium on modeling the properties of graphene, and to the Human-Brain-Project (HBP) on modeling the human brain. The Future ICT project (proposing to develop a real-time data integration and forecasting of basically everything that is going on in the world), which was the project with most ecological overlap, didn’t make it in the end.
It will be interesting to see how these two projects, which are certainly among the largest basic science projects on computer simulations ever funded, will perform. It’s certainly an experiment for EU funding, and as well in terms of how and whether such large collaborations work in areas of science which were formerly organized in smaller research groups.
